Reciprocity for Credentialed Veterinary Technicians

The Vermont Veterinary Technician Association welcomes applications for individuals who are credentialed in other states and wish to obtain Vermont certification.

Who is eligible for reciprocity?

You may apply for reciprocity if:

You are a credentialed technician (CVT, RVT, LVT) in a state that requires graduation from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program and passage of the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).

Alternate pathway applicants may be considered only if:

  • You were credentialed before January 1, 2007 in a state that, at the time, accepted alternate pathways similar to Vermont’s grandfathering period.
  • Your current state still requires graduation from an AVMA-accredited program for new credentialing.

What documentation is required for alternative pathway applicants?

Applicants for alternative pathway reciprocity must submit:

  •  A copy of your VTNE passing score
  •  Copies of all current and valid state licenses or certifications
  • Proof of 18 RACE-approved CE hours within the last 2 years
  • Proof of at least 4,000 clinical hours worked in the last 3 years
  •  Two letters of recommendation from current or past employers
  • A letter of good standing from the licensing authority in your current state

What documentation is required for non-alternative pathway applications?

Applications who obtained credentialing via graduating from an AVMA accredited program and passing the VTNE can apply for CVT status in Vermont via our membership application. These applications must only submit proof of graduation and proof of VTNE passage.

Important notes

Vermont does not accept reciprocity from states that do not currently require graduation from an AVMA-accredited program for new credentialing.
